The Rome correspondent of the NewYork Times, writing 11th Nov., says : — 'An American artist in Italy has made a design for a monument on a scale grand enough to satisfy the most unrestrained aspirations. It is proposed that the structure shall be raised to mark the completion of the first century of the existence of the Republic. The site on which it is to be placed is even selected, and it is Mount Pleasant, in the Central' Park. The general idea is that of a pedestal of octagonal form, at least 100 feet iv diameter ami 200 feet his?h. The fnces of the octagon figure are unequal, ur such as would be produced by truncatiug the angles of a parallelogram in the proportion of something like one-fifth or one-sixth of the diameter. The broader surfaces are to have lofty arched openings, to be ornarnentel with columns and pediments of great niassiveness. The attic is noble and simple in its lines ; and, in fact, the design in all its details is characterised by the moat extreme severity of taste.' It appears to have escaped the notice of the scientific that at a little town in Cambridgeshire, marked on the majjs as Kewmarket, the year ia longee thaa in any other place in the world, the inhabitants now for many consecutive Antumos having had a Second October.— Punch.
