In Resina on the night following the staircase of a house was thrown down, and another house opened in the middle, so that the inhabitants of that street fled. The spectacle as it is witnessed from Naples has now become magnificent, as a vast stream of lava is flowing down. Strangers are coining in daily to see this rare and grand demonstration of Vesuvius. The Builder states that Napoleon's willow at Kew has been cut down. 40 years ago it was taken from the willows surrounding Napoleon's grave at St Helena, and planted in Kew Gardens. At this time, and before the gardens became national property, so great was the curiosity to see it, that one Sunday a crowd of people (on being refused admittance) broke open the gates merely to look on the tree. More recently it has been no uncommon thing to see the French visitors bare their heads, or even fall upon their knees, before it. { A good dinner once a week' is what a number of charitable people in London are trying to provide for the Arabs, outcasts, and very poor children. A society exists for the purpose. It has supplied 15,000 good solid dinners at the rate of Id. each. They cost the society threepence extra. Lords Shaftesbury and Ebory, Mr Cowper, Dean Stanley, Mr Conway, and Mr Kinnaird are supporters of the movement. A similar one exists at *he East-cod.
