The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 1868. NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.

Friday, February 28. The Board held their usual fortnightly meeting at the office yesterday evening. Present : — Messrs Bentley, in the chair, Webb, Hooper, K. Burn, D. Burns, and Field. The minutes of the last meeting having been read aad confirmed, The application of Messrs Hale and Newport, received at the last meeting, came under the consideration of the Board, and on the report of the Public Works Committee, it was resolved that three culverts should be put in Tupaiastreet and two iu Motueka-street, for which tenders will be received as soon as the Fiuance Committee shall have decided in which of the three local journals the advertisement shall be inserted. The Secretary enquired whether it was the wish of the Board that a flood-gate should be included in the plan on which he is now engaged for the additional culvert across the Haven-road near the Saltwater Bridge, as several residents in that neighborhood bad expressed themselves in favor of an open culvert, and it was resolved that a flood-gale should be adopled. The Secretary mentioned incidentally that the Provincial Engineer had expressed his opinion that the inconvenience sustained in flood time by the residents in St. Vincent and Vanguard-streets, would be more effectually remedied by cutting a wide watercourse dyked up with stone in St, Vincent-street, and raising the road along the line of the watercourse to. the height of the Haven Road, thus carrying off the water from Washington Valley and Van-guard-street, aud also by the formation of an extra-sized culvert from Mrs Taylor's premises to the outlet under the Havenroad. Mr Webb spoke iu support of this proposition, which was strongly opposed by Mr D. Burns, aud the further consideration of the matter was postponed until the next meeting of the Board. A discussion ensued with reference to the repairs required on the Wairaea-road, and the Secretary was instructed to prepare a report of the state of the road, and the probable cost of repairing it. Mr Webb expressed his opinion that the question of the city sewerage was sojintimately counected with the Waterworks, that combined action in reference to both was advisable. Mr Robert Burn suggested that further legislation was requisite in order to enable the Board to borrow a further amount so to to carry out the proposed scheme of sewerage, and the subject then dropped. Several applications for repairs to roads &c, were read, and referred to the Public Works Committee. A letter was read from the Provincial Secretary stating that the wattling in Brook-street, from Mr Lewis's property to the Bun Mountain Station, had been damaged by the late floods, whereby the main pipes of the Waterworks would probably be made liable to injury, and after some discussion it was agreed that all the members of the Board should visit the spot indicated on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with a view to further coosidertioa of the subject at their next meeting;. The Chairman then invited the at ten-

tion of the Board to the danger caused by Mr M'Coukey's engine, and to the verdict delivered at the late inquest on the fire at Messrs Morrison Sclanders .& Co's store, in accordance with which the matter had been brought under the attention of the Executive, and, after some discussion, it was determined to postpone the further consideration of the matter until it was known what action would be adopted by the Government in relation to it. Several accounts were passed, aud the Board then adjourned until Friday the 13th proximo.
