CUSACK being about to leave Nelson, requests that all persons indebted to him will SETTLE their Accounts, and that all persons to whom he is indebted will SEND IN their Accounts, on or before Februarj 15, 1808. 283 To Mr E. WASTNEY, M.P.C., Suburban North. SIR— As Mr A. J. Richmond, the present member for the district of Golden Bay in the House of Representatives, is about to leave for England, we, the undersigned electors of this district, are desirous of securing the services of some one of sound and honest political principles, practical experience, and common sense, to represent our interests in the New Zealand Parliament. You are a tried servant of the public, and one in whom we can place confidence, the more particularly as you have no private ends to serve, either ior yourself or family connections, in the way of place seeking, which is the great bane of our present Government. In our opinion it is not at all requisite that a member of the House of Representatives should reside in the district which elects him, however desirable it may be that a member of the Provincial Council should do so; as the former ought to represent the province at large and the general wellbeing of the colony, whilst the latter ought to be acquainted with the special requirements of the district he represents. The present costly double postal service, needless offices aud salaries, and a remodelling of our tariff duties, call for the earnest and serious attention of legislators; in fact, a general retrenchment of the public expenditure is indispensably requisite, more especially as the greater portion of the funds so recklessly squandered are 1 contributed by the working classes of the country, upon whom an undue shareof the burden of taxation presses most heavily. Knowing that your views on those matters coincide with our own, we respectfully request that you will allow yourself to be put in nomination at the forthcoming election as our member of the House of Representatives. We are, sir, Yours very truly, Jabez M. Gibson, J.P. H. W. Burt George. C. Gilbert Robert R. Fellowes James Baird Patrick Byrne Joseph fackard S. W. Sigley Francis H. M. Ellis E. Tolly C. Gentlemen — I have much satisfaction in acknowledging the receipt of your very complimentary Requisition, and I assure you that I can have no hesitation in complying with your wishe , and as a vacancy has now been declared, I will visit the various parts of vour district previous to the day of nomination (the time and places for doing so shall be duly announced), when I will fully explain my views and opinions on the various subjects that are likely to occupy the attention of the Assembly at its next sitting.
