NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board of Works took place at the Oflice yesterday evening. Present : — Messrs. R. Burn, in the chair, Webb, D. Burns, and Field. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, the recommendation of the sub-committee appointed at the last meeting of the Board, to consider the application of Mr. G. Bennett, for a reduction of his assessment, to the effect that an allowance of £1000 should be made to him, was, after some discussion, adopted. The report of the Public Works Committee on Mr. Johnson's culvert in Col-lingwood-street having been read, and also a letter from Mr. Johnson on the subject, it was proposed by Mr. Webb that the former resolution of the Board in reference to this matter be adhered to. A letter was read from the Secretary of the No. 1 City Rifles, in accordance with a resolution passed at the annual meeting of that Corps, thanking the Board for the use of Murphy-street as a practice ground. A letter from Mr J. Hale, asking that the roads and ditches in the upper part of Vanguard-street may be repaired, and also another from Mr S. Newport to the same effect, were read and referred to the Public Works Committee,
Permission was given to Messrs Morecombe and Knight to erect a hoarding, 4 feet irom the curb, and in a line with the "present hoarding, in iront of the building now itf course of erection for Mr Phillip* in Trafalgar-street. The application of Mr Biggs for a few barrows- full of earth in front of his premises on the Waimea Road * in expectation of a visit from H.R.H.. the Duke of Edinburgh," was agreed to. A petition was read, signed hy 55 residents in Toi-toi and Washington Valleys and on the Waimea-road, praying that either a new culvert might be constructed to the Saltwater Bridge, or the present one enlarged, in order that the storm-water in time of flood may be carried off, and, after careful consideration of the matter by the Board, the Secretary was instructed to prepare a plan and estimate for a second culvert, to be submitted to the Board at its next meeting. A letter was read from Mrs Howell, of Brook-street Valley, relative to the pipes in the pipe-bridge in connection with the new Waterworks, and was referred to the Provincial Engineer. Permission was given to Mr Houghton to erect a pole in front of his premises in Trafalgar-street. A question having arisen with reference to the necessity of compliance with the provisions of the Hackney Carriages Act in the instance of Air Potter's omnibus, the Board expressed its opinion that the provisions of the Act would be sufficiently complied with by the omnibus starting from the Stand in Collingwood-street. Several accounts were passed, and the Secretary announced that the Board had" at that date £213 to its credit at the Bank. The Board then adjourned until Friday the 28th inst.
