The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1868. THE FETE.
The sports, &c, which it was intended should form part of the amusements for the Foresters' Fete on Anniversary Day, but which were postponed on account of the very unfavorable state of the weather on that occasion, came off yesterday afternoon, at the Botanical Gardens, in the presence of a very large concourse of spectators. The following are ihe names of the successful competitors m the various sports : — 100 yards Footrace. — 1, John McDonald ; 2, A. Drew. Stand and Long Jump. — I, George Cross, TO feet ; 2, Henry Moore, 9ft. 9in. Run and Long Jump. — John McDonald, 16 feet. Jtunning, hop, step, and jump. — J. Snow, 37f- feet ; J. Camp and A. Drew, 36" feet. Euaning High Jump. — 1, John McDonald, 4 feet 10 in. j James Clark, 4ft. Btn. There was also some exceedingly good sack races, and ruuning matches, for which the competition was very lively. At o o'clock about 400 .persons .partook of tea in the large booth erected expressly for the occasion, and after this repast had been brought to a conclusion, the large assemblage present, which received very considerable accessions as the evening advanced, indulged in various games and amusements, in which that eminently Nelson • institution' yclept ' Kiss in the Ring' of course formed an essential feature. At eight o'clock the fireworks were let off, comprising rockets, Roman candles, &c, and the booth was then thrown open for dancing, which was kept up with great zest to the inspiriting strains of the Volunteer Band (which had been in attendance and done good servic e throughout the afternoon), until long past midnight.
