The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, JANUARY 18, 1868. NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.

The usual fortnightly meeting of tlie Board took place yesterday evening at ihe office, at halfpast 6 o'clock. Present: .Messrs R. Burn (in the chair), D. Burns, Webb, Hooper, and Field. The minutes of the hist meeting having been read and confirmed, it was carried, on the motion of Mr Webb, that it be recorded in the minutes of the meeting that, according to the Neison Improvement Amendment Act, it is not necessary to publish the list of ratepayers in any newspaper. The Public Works Committee reported on Mr Carter's application for permission to allow carts to cross the footpath opposite his property in Hardj -street, so as to approach his weigh-bridge, which he intends placing in front of his house, instead of, as at present, in tie yard at the back. Mr Webb expressed his opinion that this procedure would be dangerous to foot pa>sengers, and that the Board would be culpable in allowing it. It was decided that the Secretary le instructed to write to Mr Carter and inform him that the Board could not grant him power to cross the foo path with carts otherwise than at right angles, Mr Hooper being the only dissentent. The subject of a communication made by the Board some time since through their Secretary to the Inspector of Nui*a r ices. requesting him to resign his office, to which no reply had been received, nnd also of a communication from the Inspector requesting a fortnight's leave of absence, was then brought before the meeting. ' With reference to the former letter, Mr D. Burns expressed his opinion than no insult was intended by Mr Watts, whilst Mr W<;nb considered that he was incompetent to fulfil the duties of the office. After considerable discussion, it was proposed by Mr Webb that Mr Watts be granted leave of absence until the 31st of July next (the termination of the financial year) and that he be paid his salary up to that date, which was lost on division. The subject then dropped, no further action being taken in the matrer. A letter was received from Mr Foy, asking permission to erect a verandah in front of his house in Hardy-street West, which was granted subject to the inspection of the Secretary. The sulject of the present state of the ford in Manuka-street was referred to the Public Works Committee, as well ns the reduction of the-hill in Shelbourne-street, near Mr Luokic-'s house. Mr Webb gave notice cf a motion relative to the widening of the Haven-road near the Saltwater Bridge, and the Secretary was instructed to have a chain made and fitted to the sluice gate at the bridge, to be used in case of heavy freshes irom Toi-toi and Washington Valleys. The Board then adjourned until Friday the 31st inst. T—^ ~-_ i
