The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1867. NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.

The fortnightly meeting ofthe Board of Works took place on Friday evening last at the office. Present: Messrs Burn (in the chair), Burns, Hooper, and Webb. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The report ofthe Public Works Committee on the letter of Mrs Moorhouse received at the last meeting, was read, expressing their regret that they could not comply with her proposition, inasmuch as it would destroy work which had lately been complete;! by the Board for the express purpose of protecting the property ofthe inhabitants .generally in that neighborhood. They also reported in favor of the application of Messrs Curtis Brothers, also received at the last Board, and suggested that the Brook-street stream in BrontiBixeii, near the property of N. Edwards, Esq., a should be repaired, that gentleman having ex--pressed his willingness to as- ist in the work. Mr John Scott having undertaken to assist in filling up. the end of Trafalgar- street North near his mill, in order to prevent the Maitai from encroaching on the street, to the detriment both of the road and the sewer, it was suggested by tne Committee that this work should be carried out at once. " The Pablic Works Committee also recommended that the joint suggestions of the Provincial Engineer and the Secretary to the Board should be adopted with reference to the securing the approaches to Nile-street bridge. A letter was read from Mr Wadman, requesting permission to fence in a piece of ground in the rear of his property in Bridge-street, undertaking to pay the Board a peppercorn rent, and to remove the fence at aJny time when required, v which request was complied with. A letter was read from Captain and Adjutant Lockett, written by direction of the officer commanding the volunteer force requesting permission to nse Murphy-street as a Rifle Range. Permission was given on condition thatthe inhabitants of the neighborhood made no objection to the arrangement. A. circular was received from Mr. .J. Sigley, Btating that he had made arrangements for a constant supply of good fresh burnt lime from Massacre Bay: A letter was read from Mr. Bettany relative to the cleaning out a ditch and culv- rt near his premises in Washington-valley, which was referred to the Public Works Committee, as were also letters from Messrs R. Levein, Franzen, R. B. Scott, and J. Firth, calling attention to the bad state of the water-table in front of their premises at the Port, and from Mr. Potter, relative to a pool of water in Vanguard-street, opposite the Postboy Hotel. A letter was received from the Agent of the London and Liverpool Insurance Company, reducing the rate of insurance on the Board-office, Marketplace, &c. from £500 to £300. A notification was read from the Provincial Secretary, stating that £150 had been placed to the credit, of the Board at the Bank of JNew Zealand, being the balance of the vote for the Board of Works. The Secretary was instructed to see that some repairs .required in Grove-Street be carried out j ': immediately. A discussion arose relative to the letter ad- . , dressed by the Inspector of Nuisances to the Board about a month ago, and the consideration ; of that communication was deferred until'a full ",. meeting of the Board. ..
