NELSON BOARD OF WOKKS.
A meeting of the Board took place yesterday evening at the office. Present: Messrs Bentley (in the chair), Webb, Burn, Burns, Hooper, and Meld. '
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
The Finance Committee reported that, in consequence of the press of business arising from the late assizes having prevented their proposed consultation with the Provincial Solicitor in reference to the recovery of rates in arrear, it was resolved that the matter should be reported upon at the next meeting. The Secretary reported with reference to the Trafalgar-street sewer, that he had been through that work, and had ascertained that the escape of water complained of on the occasion of the late fire, had been caused by the pointing of the brickwork having given way for several feet on either side of the sluicegates at the junction of Trafalgar and Hardy-streets; thus permitting the water to escape behind the brickwork; and also that for about a chain on the upper side of the manhole near Mr Scott's yard, the key-bricks of the arch had given way. These defects were ordered to be remedied forthwith, and the sewer generally to be put in thorough repair.
A letter was read from Mr Betts requesting that the pathway in front of his new residence in Hardy-street might be made up, and the Secretary was instructed to have the pathway filled up with the earth from the adjacent watertables.
A letter was read from Mr Michael Hodgins,
complaining that the street in Washington Valley was encroaching on his property. The consideration of this matter was deferred. A letter from Mrs Moorhouse was read, calling attention to the fact that Bronti-street, and its junction with Scotland-street; has heeu rendered impassable by cattle in consequence of the embankment and wattling lately carried out there. The matter was referred to the Public Works Committee to be reported on at the next meeting of the Board. A letter was read from Messrs Curtis Brothers, requesting that the road in Trafalgar-street North, in front of their timber yard, might be filled up, and asking permission to change the place of the flagstaff used by them as Agents for Lloyds. This was also referred to the Public Yv'orks "Committee for their report. The sum of £30 was. granted on the application of Mr A. Adams, for the kerbing of Bridge-street. The amount to be levied on the general assessment of property for the current year (which commenced on the Ist August last), and also the amount to be levied by special rate for the sewer lately constructed in Bridge-street, weve then laid before the Board by the Secretary, from which it appeared that the latter amounted tp about £35,278, whilst the former amounted to about £647,311, being an increase of about £ 18,000 on the gross amount of last assessment. They were referred to a committee, composed of Messrs D. Burns, Hooper, Webb, and Pield, for the examination of the assessment books. The special rate for the Bridge-street sewer was fixed at three farthings iv the pound, the general rate to be fixed when the committee shall have sent in their report. The Board then adjourned until Friday, the 20th instant.
