The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1867. THE PRINCE'S VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND.
The following letter addressed lay the .Premier, in reply to a communication from the Superintendent of Otago, expressing the very geueral desire felt in .that province that the Duke of Edinburgh should honor Dunedin with a visit, merely shows tbat at the time of its date nothing further was known as to the Prince's movements in this colony than the bare announcement that he would certainly visit Auckland and Wellington. It is probable that the next mail from Melbourne will enable tho Government to furnish more succinct particulars on the subject, and thus warrant the colonists in commencing whatever preparations they may have in contemplation for the reception of his Royal Highness.* Judging from the prolonged stay which the Prince has already made iu South Australia, during which he has visited several almost insignificant places in the interior, and the announcement that his visit to Victoria would be extended to a month's duration, there seems little reason. to doubt that he will, in like manner, be desirous of visiting all the principal ports of this colony, and we are certainly justified in entertaining the expectation that Nelson will form one of the items in the Prince's itinerary during his visit to New Zealand. The following is the letter to which we have referred : —
To his Honor the Superintendent, Otago.
Sir — I have to acknoAvledge the receipt of your Honor's letter, No. 811b, of the 19th instant, and to state that the Government has no information ■with respect to tbe intended visit of his Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to NeAv Zealand beyond what is conveyed in tlie despatches from the Secretary of State, numbered and dated respectively No. 19 of the Ist of May, and 39 of the 26th of Jane last, and presented during the recent session to the Legislature, which only state generally that his Royal Highness will only visit Auckland and Wellington.
Should it be found, on the arrival of his Royal Highness, that his other engagements would admit it, he will be advised to visit the principal settlements, including (| Otago, in the Soutliprn Island. Until' more is known of the probable stay which his Royal Highness will make in this colony, and whether he will be able to travel through the country, and how many places he will visit, it is impossible to state how the funds voted for his reception will be available for expenditure in any one place. I have, etc., .'-'--'' ET W. BTAFTORD. C&gaul Secretary's, Office, .w-eUingtoe, October S6. M7.
