THE LATE FIRE.

To the Editor op the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir—ln looking over your notice of the fire ia yesterday's Mail, I seetluit you also observed upon a deficiency in the supply of water, when the engines came upon the scene of the conflagration —that in fact for some considerable time there was none —that the engines were simply drawing air —that during this interval hundred upon hundred pounds woth of property was being - destroyed. Are you aware, Mr Editor, that while the engines were so engaged, there was at least 18 inches of water in the drain, and that the reason of the engines not throwing it up, was a mere act of carelessness on the pare of those who were deputed to perform the duty of emersing the hose and connecting the same with the engine. lam informed upon good authority that the joints in this portion of the hose were so inefficiently made, as to admit of such an amount of air as would preclude the possibility of the engines working, and that this defect was not ascertained until pointed out by a person standing near, who happened to possess a more thorough acquiiimance with this part of the business. It would be superfluous on ray part to. suggest the necessity of placing persons thoroughly conversant with their particular portions of the dutj upon sue a very iuiporiu'ii positions. I am, etc., Enquirer.
