NOTES FROM WAKEFIELD.

The members of the Nelson Acclimatisation Society will be glad to hear that one out of the two nests of the Australian magpie has lately sent forth three fine young birds. They are very strong on the wing, and soon, it is expected, will be doing battle with any poor kawkaw that comes across their path. Apprehensions are entertained that should the magpies increase to any great extent, the kawkaws will have to remove to other regions. The large falcon or New Zealand hawk is giving the district of Wakefield a wide berth, thus one evil will to a great extent counterbalance the other. We understand that the Cattle Trespass Act is being carried out with great vigor iu and about Wakefield. The poundage fees must amount to a very considerable item, for almost every day a mob of some kind of cattle is seen traversing the trunk road either to or from the pound. The late cold showers of rain mixed occasionally with hail, which we have been experiencing for the last fortnight, have to a certain extent checked vegetation, but the country generally looks verj charming, and from the remarks s naade by those who have lately come up the country from our Empire City on the neighboring coal and gold fields of Collingwood, we ought to be very thankful . that our lines have fallen upon such a very pretty district as Waimea South. We learn that the poor man Carvell, whose accident we narrated some time back, is still confined to his bed, and, of necessity has suffered a long continuance of pain, and no hopes are now entertained of the bone of the leg ever uniting.
