- The Weslport Times of the 24th instant gives a very humorous description of a ' burlesque meeting' held at Hamilton's Hotel, Westport, and convened by Mr John Crate, having for its ostensible object the increase of representation for that township, which was attended by half a dozen . individuals, and of whieh Mr Crate constituted himself the chairman — that necessary constituent of the meeting not being forthcoming, Mr Crate then commenced a rigmarole of what he thought, what he did, and what he considered ought to be done. It was a slight mistake about him being the principal in the matter, but he was not ashamed to take the chair. Why should he ? Great mistakes had been made (nobody doubted this) in the management of the affairs connected with Westport. His Honor the Superintendent had said that if they gave increased representatives to Westport, there might be in a little while nobody to be represented. He (Mr Crate) understood the working of the whole aifair. Mr Donne was the most indefatigable man in the Council ; he (the convener) knew it. The Nelson Government wished to further the interests of the Karamea and Collingwood districts at the expense of the Buller, whieh was the key to the Nei- on province. The convener then went on to tell the meeting that he differed in his estimates frcm Mr Kynnersley. From his representations to the head of the department, he had obtained a sum of money for this district. Large sums of money had been collected, and it was impossible that we could be in debt — but we were told we v. e- e in debt £20,000, and he (the chairman) could not understand it, if he was correct in his estimates. They wanted a town board, but on second thoughts, he thought they were not sufficiently advanced for a town board. The con-, vener then went on at some length in a similar strain. One solitary resolution was carried, and the next thing was to move another appointing a deputation — the resolution itself was already drawn up, but the mover was wanting, and nobody would undertake to father it. The chairman — I dissolve this meeting — the meeting's dissolved. So thus the burlesque ended, amid the good-humored laughing of the auditory. Holloway's Pills— These celebrated Pills are especially useful in purifying the blood, cleansing the stomach, gently stimulating the kidneys, and acting as mild aperients. A few doses of this purifying medicine set the foulest stomach right, remove all bilious symptoms, steady the circulation, give strength to the muscles, and composure .to the brain and nerves. 'J'he Pills are so innoxious that they may be taken by persons in the most delicate state of heal: h, and with marvellous effect. ' When the system has been enervated by over-indulgence, or exhausted by mercurial preparations, these Pills are excellent restoratives ; they expel the poison and enrich the blood. 3578 The New Zealand Gazette of the 21st ultimo contained notifications that the Westport, BriohtOD, and Charleston Railway Act, passed by the Nelson Provincial Council during its last session, has received the Governor's assent; that Joseph Giles, Esq., has been appointed Resident Magis--trjittf.'for the Nelson Southwest Goldfie'ds; aod that Mr John Mabiu. of Bridge-street, /has been licensed to act as a Customhouse at Nelsou.
