Friday, October 25, 1867. A meeting of tlie Board took place at the Office on Friday afternoon; present — Messrs Bentley, in the chair, Webb, J. Hooper, D. Burns, ami Field. Tlie minutes of last meetiug were read and confirmed.. The Cliairmau read the by-laws relative to cabstands, received from the Solicitor to tlie Board, aud it was resolved that they should be submitted to his Honor the Superintendent tor his approval. The Fubiic Works Committee, having visited the premises of Messrs Avery, Brother?, in Biidge-street, when tbe engine was in full piny, stated their unanimous opinion that no danger was likely to occur from this source to the surrounding buildings, aud a resolution to that effect was passed. Tbe Public Works Commitlee also proposed that the further consideration of the memorial i'rom the inhabitants of Washington Valley relative to the improvements iu tliat locality, be postponed until next Board day, as well as Mr Burnett's letter relative to the improvements of the upper end of Hampden-street, which was carried. A letter from Mr Fleming asking for permission to erect, a verandah to bis house in Kauly-street, was ivad, and the request <-ont.uiied in it was granted. A letter was read from Mrs Watts, of Bridgr-ei'd, in icpiy to a communication from the Secretary n-questing her to remove a fence whicli idiuts on tbe road at Miltou-grove, afkiuj; lor permission tr- avail herself of the same conditions as those imposed in Dr Uen wick's case. The Secretary was instructed to inform Mrs Watts that her request was complied with. The Chairman drew the attention of the Board to the state of the Haven-road ■between the Albion and Commercial Wharves, which was ordered to be repaired immediately. The Seeretary stated, in reference to an advertisement which appeared in the Colonist of Friday, signed 'J. P. Cooke,' reflecting on hie conduct, that he denied in toto the assertions made in that letter, and desired to obtain the protection of the Board from such aitacks, when engaged in *i»e performance of his daty. however arrived at no decision oil this matter, and the subject was dropped. A letter having been read by the Chairman from Mr Adams, the contractor for lhe kerbing of Bridge-street, asking for an advance of £20, Mr Webb expressed his extreme dissatisfaction at the manner iu which the work had hitherto been carried out, and proposed that uo further advances should be made to the contractor until the work was declared to have been performed in a satisfactory way. This was seconded by Mr Field, but was afterwards withdrawn, on the'understanding that the subject should be brought forward at the next meeting, in order that the work might be examined iu the mtan while. A similar application for £100 from Messrs Cockram and Dunlop, for gravelling the Waimea-road, was granted. A letter from Mr John Maclean, of Hokitika, was read by the Chairman, stating that he was in possession of the requisite plant for laying down asphalte pavements iu Nelson, and proposing that the Board should guarautee the laying down of not less than .00 yards as a eomnieucenient. Mr Webb said that ihe expense of this proceeding might be met by a special rate, and would cost about 5s 6d per yard; he also stated that several persons with whom he had spoken ou the su'ject had expressed their willingness to adopt such a plan, which had beeu satisfactorily carried out in Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunediu. It was however agreed that the Board were not . at present in a position to aequie-ce in MiMaclean's proposal, and the Secretary was instructed to write to him to that effect. The Board adjourned at 20 minutes past 5, unlil Friday, the Bth November at half-past 8.
