It is greatly to be regretted that, owing to the unusually boisterous weather experienced by the Ida Ziegler, the first attempt of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society to introduce a valuable lot of English insectivorous birds into the province has proved a complete failure.' A large number of larks, linnets, swallows, thrushes, magpies, etc., were shipped at London at the cost of the Society, but not a single specimen survived the severe weather; although a few larks brought out by one of the passengers have arrived safely.
A letter is published in the Taranaki Herald of the 12th instant from Gilbert Kerr & Co., of Abchurch-lane, London, dated August 1, and adressed to the Superintendent of Taranaki, stating that they regret to say that, after all the annoyance and delay that have occurred with the Ironsand Company, tbere was but little prospect of the matter being proceeded with at present.
The inhabitants of New South Wales are rather tired of the present name of the colony, they want something moi-e euphonious, and think the visit of H.R.H. Prince Alfred affords a good opportunity for making the change, the Prince standing sponsor. ADreda, Alfredland, Albertland, and Edina, have all been proposed; and one correspondent of the Empire asks — What more appropriate came for the fairest of Australia's lands — for the brightest gem in the southern seas, than ' Albion.?'
