Private letters received by the Panama mail state that Mr Crosbie Ward is ill, and quite unable to attend to business. He is now residing with his father in Ireland.
The mail arrived from Auckland yesterday. Five policemen who came by the same steamer report that 500 Maoris had collected on the Upper Thames for,the purpose of making a descent upon the Europeans on the diggings. This report is supposed to be exaggerated. The quartz reef on the Thames diggings had turned out well.
A fire broke oiit at Blenheim yesterday by which the extensive premises of Mr Dempsey, saddler, were destroyed. The premises were only insured in the Northern Office for £400.
No information as to Sir George Grey's successor had been received by the Panama mail.
