THE PUBLIC MEETINGS.
To the Editor of the Nelson Evening. Mail. Sir — Mr Stafford has been let off very easily at the late public meetings, considering that he is the chief of the Ministry whose acts it is the ostensible purpose of the League to oppose and counteract, and also that he what is called 'represents' the City of Nelson in the General Assembly. Having for many years consistently opposed Mr Stafford, from being sceptical of tho Ethiopian's power to change his skin or the leopard his spots, and knowing that clear water could not come from such a muddy source — I have beeu more than once astonished that the electors of Nelson should be so besotted as to place such a man in a position where he can work out I his private ends and commit so much pubI lie mischief. When he cut off the fairest portion of this province one would have supposed that the electors would show their estimate of a man who could act so basely by unanimously rejecting him when he again became a candidate; but no, spaniel-like, the more he kicked them the more he fawned on them. Since he has : l been supported by the late Superintendent j and by a paper that watched and exposed i hi_> dodges for years, he has taken every opportunity of treating this province with slights and insults; aud it will be shortly seen perhaps whether the electors of Nelson city will be again cajoled by him ; or any other man. Yours, etc., A Countey Elector. Sept. 12, 1867.
