A London letter states that a Scotch nobleman, of whose doings on the turf something has been heard lately — the young Duke of Hamilton — was saved from a loss of £180,000 in a single bet against Hermit, by the personal interposition of the Prince of Wales. Oxford has voted £500 from the University funds in aid of the explorations now going forward in Palestine ; a similar amount will probably be voted at Cambridge. The purposes of the committee are being pursued with zeal and success. A letter from Italy says — Within the next month there will be in the Mediterranean waters no fewer than nine fleets — .the English, the French, the Italian, the Russian, the Austrian, the American, the Spanish, the Turkish, and, finally, the Prussian, which is just announced as haviug destined Naples as its first station. The empire of Mexico may now be said to be at an end, as the city of Mexico surrendered to the Liberals on the 21st, and the city of Vera Cruz on the 27th June. Professor Liebig dined lately with the Emperor Napoleon. The soup was prepared ou this occasion with "Liebig's extract of meat."
