Committee of last year, thought that if was incumbent on him to show from the following statement the amounts which had been paid and received by the Collector during the last twelve months . — Sept. — Rates collected IG9ZISs; paid into Bank 84/ 7s 2d. 0ct.— 245/ Os 2d; 278nis8d. From this statement it appeared that there was a surplus paid into the bank by the Collector of £13 11s 8d; a very slight discrepancy existed between the Auditors' statement of the surplus, and that made by Mr Burn, who said that the Auditors hod stated that the Secretary's books were quite correct j the only mistake was the overdrawing of one. mouth's salary, which had been pointed out by the Secretary himself. After some discussion it was agreed that the further consideration of the Report of the Finance Committee should be postponed until the next meeting of the Board. Mr Webb then gave the Report of the Public Works Committee, who had visited the various localities indicated, and who recommended that certain works should be carried out for the public convenience, on Mr Black's property in Kawai-street, where the water runs across the road; in Franklyn-street; on the Waimea-road from the tollgate (which was proved to be within the town boundary), and Gardiner's Ford, where wattling is required to be done, for which specifications were ordered to be prepared; for the construction of a culvert in Nile-street, near Mr Coleman's; for the formation and gravelling of the Waimea-road, near the Rising Sun ; the footpath and road in Shelburne-street, near Judge Richmond's house, to be lowered. The Report also called attention to the bad state of Grove-street, and suggested that a few loads of gravel should be used ' in filling up the holes there; to an encroachmeutf on the line of street near Milton-grove; to the filling up of some holes in Tasman-street; and to the present state of the Prince Albert Bridge, which required some willow stakes to be driven as speedily as possible, and suggested that a specification should be drawn up for the works in Nile-street and on the Waimearoad to Gardiner's-ford. The report was then adopted. The Secretary having been directed to advertise for a supply of kerosine for the next twelve months, Mr Webb proposed that tenders should be advertised for the lamplighting of the city complete, including lighting, cleaning, triming, supply of oil, etc., which was carried. In reference to Mr Wimsett's proposal with respect to the formation of a culvert in Hardy-street, the consideration of which had been postponed, it was agreed that the proposal should be adopted. The Secretary was instructed to communicate with Mrs Betts, in reply to an enquiry relative to the level of Waimeastreet. A letter was read from Mr Rout, complaining of the removal of earth in Ex-aminer-street, opposite Mr Hayden's cot- I tage. It appeared that the Secretary had ! already threatened Mr Hayden with a summons in refereuce to this matter. The Board complied with a request from Mr Alexander Adams that he should be paid an instalment of 20/ on stone prepared for the curbing of Bridge-street. A letter was read from Mr W. M. Stanton, in reference to the bad state of the upper end of Collingwood-street, and of Brougham-street, which was ordered to be reported upon at the next meeting. The application from Mr J. W. Potter, for 35/, on account of his contract for delivery of Boulder Bank gravel on the Beach and Waimea-roads, was complied j with, and 30/, being 75 per cent, on work performed, was ordered to be paid. The following accounts were ordered to be paid: — William Jennings, for filling up and forming part of the Haven-road £18 16s; Henry Hpunsell, for kerosine, &c. £4 9s 6d ; J. W. Taylor, for locks 7s 6d ; E. Barton, 14£ days' labor at 18s, with horse and cart, £12 16s 6d. The Secretary was instructed to write to Dr Renwick, requesting him to put the fence, on his property in Hardy -street in Hue with the street. : ; , Proposals, by Mr Webb, that the Board -
should hold its meetings weekly, and by t Mr Field, that its next meeting be at 6 p.m. instead of 3| p.m., having been negatived. The Board adjourned until Friday, the 13th September.
