Upper Bridge-street has had the water-tables lowered, to allow of a proper tall for the surfacewater from Milton : street, and also the footpaths lowered, at a cost of 40/. * Trafalgar-street, extending from the church> steps to the Kiver Maitai, has been gravelled, so as to give a better crown to the road to. allow 1 surface-water to run of, at a cost of 47/. Two new iron slides have also been put into - the main sewer, for the purpose of forming a temporary dam for water for the Eire Brigade, in case of fire, at a cost of 10/. ; , Waimea-street has beon gravelled from the Fleece Hotel to Saltwater-bridge, at a cost of 30/.. In ColHngwood-street the road has been: raised from Field's brewery to CoMingwood-bridge, at a cost of 45/, part of which wns subscribed by the inhabitants of the above street. From the north end of the bridge, extending beyond Mr. Jen-. Dings! house, the road has also been filled up and formed, partly by prison labor, and partly by the Board, at a cost of. 50/. In St. Vincent and Gloucester- streets, a roadf has been formed, out of gravel obtained out b the ditch after freshes, at a cost of -40/, and ultijmately agood dray road will be formed through to the Haven-road. . . - Hardy-street and Vanguard-street, extending from Cook's, the painter, to G. ,Witney's, has been gravelled at a cost of £36 10s. ; new brick sewers have also been executed between Franklyn and Vanguard-street, and also between Vangunrd and Totara-streets, at a cost of £30. A good portion of Vangmird-street, extending from Frank-lyn-street to the lower end of Victory rsquarey has been crowued up' ready for gravelling by thY material c:ming out of ditches, at a cost "of 31/. In Washington-valley, near Britannia Heights, a cutting has been completed at a cost of 87/; and a brick sewer near Mr, Bettany's has been built, at a cost of 10/, half of which was paid by Mr. Bettany. • In Tory-street, the water-tables have been cut down, and the road formed, at a cost of IG£ Nile-street east, extending Jroni the River Maitai to F. Huddlesione's. Tfisqr, has been gravelled, along the centre of the road, at a cost of 20/. -' In Hampden-atreet Kast, the road has been formed and gravelled, and culverts repaired, at a cost of 102/. The whole of the water-tables, ditches, and drains, extending from the toll-gate to Mr. Biggs', have beenproperly cleaned out and repaired, at a cost of 60/. Gravel has also been constantly laid on and spread over' the Waimearoad, at a cost of 4u/. . and inserting' 'glazed- earthenware pipes in their places; repairing sea-wall oh the Haven-road, and brick culverts in several parts of the town, and the lighting and cleaning of the lamps, &c, , During the year, a,rate of one penny in the pound has been levied, and, as will be seen by. the balance sheet, the sum of £2,213 has been recieved. This amount is more than ever was obtained in the time before, evidently showing the perseverance and exertions of the collector, Mr. Watts. '■ This rate was fixed upon, not because it \rouM bring in a. sufficient sum to meet the requirements of the cityi but because it was considered to fall heavy enough on many of the inhabitants, who, in addition, would have to pay a special rate for the Trafalgar and. Hardy -street sewers. The special rate received from Trafalgar street has amounted to £244 10s. 2d. ; that from Hardystreet, to £76 3s. 5d. ; . and 1 have also to inform you this, year completes the payment of the special rate for the above streets, the debentures all being taken up and paid hy the Board. An action for damages has been sustained bythe Board; during the year, for ah accident to Mr. Birrell, who fell from a bus while driving along Nile-street East, over a formation of road eighteen inches high, and sloped, but not sufficient to satisfy the Bench. An Inspector of Nuisances has been appointed during the year, and by the exertions of that officer many foul places have been cleaned, and also many nuisances abated. The profit realized by the Board having a hor&e and cart of its own, has been £90 for the past year. Four members of the Board have to be elected, one in the room of Mr Aitken, who has resigned; and three in place of Messrs Rout, Wright, and D. Burns, who retire by rotation, but who are eligible for re-election. It will be unnecessary for the Board tc say any thing further of its proceedings, the same having been published from time to time in the local papers.- ; , , The accounts for the past year, with oil the vouchers and documents relating thereto, will be laid before you, and be submitted to two auditors to be appointed by this meeting of ratepayers.
