It rarely happens that we have to speak in ■'. commendatory terms of the arrangements made by the Government for the forwarding of • the English Mail to this port. On the present occasion, however, it is only fair to acknowledge that no time lias been lost in placing us in possession of the mail, which actually reached us, by the Phoebe, three days in advance of its time, having been shipped from the Rangitoto at Port Chalmers, instead of waitiug, as has usually been the case of late, for the arrival of the Panama Mail. We have lately inspected a highly creditable specimen of our local industries in- the shape of a card-table of totara wood, of a very rare and beautiful character; iriade to order by Mr Fleming, cabinet- | maker, of Hardy-street. The table is ot the : usual ; design, but the veneering is exceedingly effective, much judgment ! haying evidently been shown in selectiug the various pieces of which it is composed. ToTthose who are in such mysteries we may state that great difficulty , in obtaining sound totara Oiarood, added to which the trees are generally small, and almost invariably grow in ■places? hard'bf -access, : : 'a fact which protiably jfor thia-: wood - being so (i: :^'^liomyeniployed for sucfc purposes.
