The Grey River Argus of the 10th iust. expresses its opinion that the petition to the General Assembly drawn up hy the Separation League forrr.ed at Hokitika, and recommending that Westland should be formed into a separate Province with a Government of its own, will be repudiated by the inhabitants of the Grey, who would prefer annexation to Nelson. A public •meeting was to take place at Kilgour's Hotel, Greymouth, od Wednesday last, fbr the purpose of discussing the questious of separation from Canterbury, annexation to Nelsou, or union with Hokitika, and the Argus expects that the verdict will be *' Annexation to Nelson." Archbishop Poldiug arrived at Melbourne iv the Chariot of Fame on the 29th ult. from Europe, and left two days after I for Sydney, where preparations had beeu I made to give him an enthusiastic welcome I on his arrival. It is a curious fact that I the two ships, the Queen of the South and I Chariot of Fame^ both left Liverpool I within half an hour of each other. When I off Cape Leuwin they sighted each other,
! and from >that time they kept in company, I being seldom more than three or four miles apart. They thus ran iv company a distance of 1200 miles, sometimes running at the rate of 13 knots an hour. The race is described as having been very exciting to the passengers.
