The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, AUGUST 1867.

We understand that the following amounts represent the losses sustained by the principal sufferers by the late fire. Mr. Wilkie estimates his loss by the destruction tf his stgre at £1,350, covered by insurances in the London and Lancashire, and Imperial, for £1,000, whilst his loss by stock destroyed is rated at £5,200, covered by insurance in the Liverpool and London for £2,000, making, as we have said, a total loss of £1,500. Mr. Davis estimates his loss at £3.200, covered by insurances in the London and Lancashire, Victoria, Imperial, and New Zealand Offices, for £1,950. Mr. Hornby had only effected an insurance upou his Auction Mart for £500, and the furniture aud other effects ou the premises at the time of the fire were much injured by the reckless manner in which, under the excitement of the moment they were thrown into the street. Amongst the passengers by the Otago from Melbourne, were no less than 116 Celestials en route for Otago, where we understand that the Chinese element in the population is largely on the increase. Some of these '"interesting strangers" lauded this morning, when a considerable number of Maoris were congregated on the wharf, and a most auiusiug scene ensued between the two copper-colored races. The Maoris appeared to be infinitely amused by the large " unmentionables " which form part of John Chinaman's attire, jeering at the wearers, and "chaffing" them as "waihenas," whilst the Chinese seemed to be equally astonished and diverted by the tatooed countenances of our native friends.
