To tue Editor op the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir — Iu your yesterday's edition referring to the fire I observe you state that I ordered the small engine to play on the houses on the south side of Bridge-street to prevent tnem catching-— this is a mistake. I merely pointed out the necessity of attending to that side of the street to t ! ie Captaiu of the Fire Brigade, who immediately saw the danger, a,nd he it was who gave the necessary orders to the Brigade to play the engine for a short time against the houses in question. - : Yours] &c, yA” ■ J. Shakp.

To^he Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir— -Having observed au advertisement of Mr Loring, butcher, publishing the opinion of Dr Cusack as to- the quality of his meat compared with the mutton sold by other butchers, I would ask, through the medium of your journal, if the Doctor has at any time inspected the unsound mutton snpplied to the hospital and at the branch Taranaki Buildings, &c. &c? Perhaps it is not his duty; if uot, it is the duty of the newly-appointed committee to take evidence so as to ascertain if the butcher having the contract for the supply of meat to the public institutions is fulfilling his contract by supplying mutton of a quality quite unfit for the food of healthy people, much less for that of the sick. A thorough investigation ought to be instituted, so as to put an end to these abuses. Yours, etc., A Voice. August 14th, 1867.
