The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY. AUGUST 5, 1867. NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.

The first general meeting of the Board for the present year took place ou Friday afternoon. Present: Messrs R. Burn (in the chair), Bentley, Burns, Webb, Hooper, Field, aud Carter. The minutes of the last meetings were read and confirmed. Mr Burn then vacated the chair, which was occupied pro teni. by Mr Hooper* pending the election of the permanent chairman. Mr Webb proposed Mr Burns as chairman, who however declined to accept the honor. Mr Burns then proposed Mr Bum, which was seconded hy Mr Webb. Mr Carter proposed and Mr Field seconded the appointment of Mr Bentley; and on the question being put to the Board the votes appeared equal for both candidates, and the election was decided by the chairman (Mr Hooper) giving the casting vote for Mr Bentley, who expressed his acknowledgments for the honor conferred upon him. Mr Burn proposed and Mr Carter seconded that Mr Younger be re-elected secretary and surveyor, which was agreed to, and Mr Younger returned thanks on his reappointment. Mr Carter proposed, and Mr R. Burn seconded the re-election of Mr Watts as Collector of Rates and Inspector of Nuisances. Mr Webb proposed as an amendment that the appointment of Inspector should be postponed until the next meeting of tbe Board, but the amendment not beinoseconded, was lost. Mr Watts Avas therefore re-elected and also returned thanks. The Secretary was instructed to see to the renewal of the bond given by Mr Watts, as security for the collection of the rates. Mr Burn moved that the attention of the Inspector be called to the by-laws which reference to gorse-hedges iu this city, with a view to their enforcement. The Public Works Committee recommended that the Surveyor be instructed to wattle the eastern part of Bronti-street near Scotland-street, and form the road leading to the river. The Secretary read a letter addressed by him to the Hon. E. W. Stafford, applying for £50 promised by him towards defraying the expense of a cutting mane at the top of the hill near Britannia Heights, and also a minute on that letter by Mr Stafford to Mr Watkins, in reply, authorising that gentleman to explain to the Board his original intentions in this matter. The Secretary was instructed to write to Mr Watkins, to ascertain Mr Stafford's intentions in reference to this business. A communication was received from the Provincial Secretary, stating that Mr Charles Harley had conveyed to the Superintendent, for the public benefit, the road laid out by him, 30 feet wide, through Section 179, from Bridge-street to the Depot Reserve, and that the Government had agreed to continue this road through

the reserve to Hardy-street, and thereby dedicating the street to the control of the Board. The Secretary was instructed to advertise for teuders for the formation and gravelling of Harley-street. Tenders to be sent iu by the 16th inst. The folloAving tenders were opened for the supply of Boulder Bank gravel : — J. W. Potter, 3s. lOd. per cubic yard ; W. Akersten, 45.; J. Garrard and H. Bullard, No. 1 specimen, 4s. 7d , Nos. 2 and 3, 4s. 4£d. ; J. B. Calder, 45.; J. Westropp, os. Oid.; and J. Gibbons, 4s. It was agreed that the tender of Mr Potter be accepted, provided his securities be satisfactory. In the event of the reverse being the case, Mr Akersten's tender to be accepted. A letter was read from Mr Smallbone, calling the attention' of the Board to the present state of Ngatiawa-street, at the back of the Waimea-road, in which the ditch in front of Count de Lapasture's property has become filled up, aud the road is much cut up aud damaged. The Secretary was instructed to attend to the complaint. Mr Dement's applicatiou relative to his model of the Trafalgar-street seAver, was again laid before the Board, and after considerable discussion, it was resolved that Mr Dement's claim having lain dormant for seven years, it could not be recognised by the Board. A communication was received from Mr Wimsett, offering to find bricks and lime for the formation of a small culvert in front of his house in Hardy-street, the Board to provide the labor. The consideration of this offer was deferred for the present. A letter was received from Mr Rowell, asking permission to erect a blind, with iron moveable brackets, over (he Avindow of his shop at the Port. Permission granted, oa condition of its removal at the discretion of the Board. It was then resolved that the thanks of the Board of Works be given to the city police for their vigilance in preventing the feeding of horses aud cattle in the public streets. Several accounts were passed, and Mr Burn having moved that the meeting staud adjourued until that day fortnight ; Mr Webb moved, as an amendment, that it stand adjourned until Friday next. The original motion was carried, and the Board theu adjourned at 7 o'clock (the proceedings having occupied upwards of three hours) until Friday, 16th instant, at halfpast 3 o'clock p.m.
