The Hawke's Bay Herald says the subject of boiling down is oue that has forced itself on the attention of our sheepfarmers. The great increase of sheep and the want of a market for the surplus have pointed to this process as the only one by which the wealth of the district can be turned into money. It is calculated that 100,000 sheep could be annually spared from our flocks for this purpose, which would be equal, even at the low estimate of ss. a head, to £25,000 per annum, a sum which, if now in circulation, would exert a very healthful influence upon the community. The New Zealand Advertiser says, with reference to the tenders asked for last week for the Inter-provincial Steam Postal Services, that the N.Z.S.N. Company's tender has been aecepted at 4OOZ a month for each service (the present contract being 3001): 51 for first 24 hours' demurrage at any port, and 50/ per diem for every subsequent day; Government passengers to be conveyed at ordinary fares, with a deduction of 20 per cent. These are the principal features of the terms under which the contracts have been taken. From Otago we learn that the election of a mayor for the city of Dunedin took place on Monday, 22nd instant, and that the Hon. John Hyde Harris, recently appointed a member of the Legislative Council, was chosen by a majority of 63 votes.
