A trotting match, for £5 aside, took place at an early hour this morning, between Mr Jary's pony, ridden by the owner, and a grey horse the property of Mr Potter, backed (in both senses) by Mr Warren. The match was from the Spring Grove Hotel to the junction of Trafalgar and Bridge streets, a distance of about 12£ miles, which was accomplished in 45 minutes, Mr Jary's pony winning by about three quarters of a mile. The match I caused considerable excitement amongst the sporting community, aod a large num- | ber of horsemen accompanied the competitors into town. Among the articles at present in the Auckland Museum there is, according to the Herald, a wild duck that has been completely incrusted with the silicious deposits of one of the hot lakes; this is very curious ; also a New Zealand rat, 'very small as compared with the European I rat, and a frog. A curiosity of another
kind is a copy of the Auckland Times, No. 11, date October 18, 1842, printed by a mangle, by Henry Falwasser, sole editor and publisher. By a return published in the Wellington Provincial Government Gazette it is shown that the amount of custom duties collected at the port of Wellington for the quarters ending respectively 30th of June, 1867, and 30th June, 1866, is £18,177 18s 2d, and £18,354 16s 3d, showing a decrease of £177 2s Id. The New Zealand Examiner says: — Mr Jordan, late Agent-General for Queenslaud, has been appointed Managing Director of the company recently formed for the utilisation of the iron sand at Taranaki, and intends almost immediately to proceed to New Zealand iu that capacity. A Sydney telegram states that the practice for the Intercolonial Rifle Match has beeu splendid. The ten highest at the first two ranges averaged 70 points. Novel matches appear to be on the increase in New South Wales. A short time ago a butcher dressed a sheep iu 6 rain. 39 sec.
