EMBANKMENT ACROSS THE MAITAI.
The Select Committee appointed to take into consideration the desirability of constructing , an embankment across the harbor from the north side of the Maitai River, beg to report as follows : — That the great public work which your Committee have had under consideration would be the meaus of conferring very large and various benefits oa (he province, especially ou the town of Nelson. Several thousand acres of the richest possible land would by this means be readily reclaimed, the building area of the town would be considerably extended, and its sanitary condition much improved. Your Committee have, however, been unable to obtain any satisfactory evidence as to how far (or whether to nny extent) such an embnrkment would endanger the harbor by lessening the depth of water. As evidence of the highest value on this as well as on every other point bearing on this project, will in all probability be shortly laid before the Government in the reports of Mr Balfour — Your Committee recommend that the further consideration of the subject should be deferred to the next meeting of the Council, when your Committee, it is hoped, will no longer have any difficulty in coining to a, definite conclusion.
