BETTER LATE THAN NEVER.

To the Editor of tub ' Nelson Evening Mail.' Sik —ls it not passing strange how the impression ever got possession of the minds of a very large number of ratepayers of Suburban North that the Chairmau of their Road Board did refuse to furnish at once "any information which it was in his power to give," unless there was indeed some foundation for such a statement ? I must honestly confess, in spite of Mr Pollock's denial, that I cannot but regard the fact that he has not furnished them up to the present moment, as the best proof that these individuals were not altogether wrocg, aud that he actually did refuse to give them. One is led to wonder what intricate complicaHou of accounts, or what formidable items needed to be raastered } ia order to explain the circumstance' that a full week has elapsed siuce the passing of the resolution requesting information from the Chairman about these ma 1 ters, ere we get the pleasing information that " such data as can be given are now in course of preparation." As I understand it, what Mr Pollock was recpiested to supply was simply au account of the expenses which the Board Lad already incurred, aud were liable to, for contracts already let. This, surely, would have cost him but little trouble to furnish. Possibly, however, the truth may lie in the fact that a recent defeat was not likely to. prove a very active stimulus to exertion; and that to this we may refer the apathy which he now exhibits towards his former constituents. It may be, moreover, that he is waiting to peruse the debit side of the late floods balance-sheet! I am, &c, Scrutator. Wakapuaka, 25 June.
