The Grey River Argus of the loth says that Mr. Austin, the Government Surveyor, has arrived in Greymouth to make arrangements for cutting the Grey portiou of the system of bush tracks now being carried out under the auspices of ' the Government. The Grey River Argus of the 1 5th has the following : — The Nelson Colonist, in a recent article warning its readers against their too ready acceptance of reports concerning discoveries of gold in the neighborhood of Nelson, takes occasion to refer to what it terms a threatened rising of diggers agaiust the Grey River Argus last year, which, says the Colonist, " was : caused by published information of a pretended gold-field, which produced a futile rush." Our contemporary is perhaps quite right in preaching caution to its readers, and its reflections on the individual who^seems to have gulled the Nelson 'people as he has others before, m>y be justifiable; but it must be strangely ignorant of the history of the Nelson goldfields, and as strangely ignorant of the character of, this journal, to speak of the Little Grey rush having been a futile one, and to assert that "pretended information" ■was ever published in the Grey River Argus. Public journalists should be more careful than to bring gratuitous charges of this kind against their contemporaries, and we can only ascribe the lapse of courtesy of which the Colonist has been guilty to iguorance of the facts. The latest news from thenewrushin the . Waimea district says the Grey River Argus of the loth instant, is favorable, but does not add much to the information previouslymade public. Several first-rate claims have been opened, and it is considered probable that gold will be discovered on the main bottom, which has not yet been tried.
