Public Notices. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE WAIMEAS. £\ ENTLEMEN—I beg to inform you it is my \J[ intention to offer myself as a candidate for the Waimeas at the forthcoming election for the General Assembly. 1 have been many times requested to put myself in the position of a candidate for tlie honor of representing this district in the General Assembly, but have always declined to accede to those requests, preferring to confine myself to local purposes, in the advocacy of which I trust you have, for the last twenty years, founrt me faithful and sincere, as well as in doing everything in my power to advance the interest and well-being of the province in the many public capacities in which I have been placed. Nor do I now covet or wish for honors, but am only actuated by a strong desire to uphold the privileges granted so liberally by the Constitution Act. to the settlers of New Zealand by the Imperial Parliament, and to maintain privileges like to those which the people of England are uow striving to obtain in the Reform movement ; by a des ; re to see justice done to the bonafide settlers in New Zealand — the bone and sinew of the colony. I entirely disapprove of the present mode of taxation, which lays nine-tenths of i lie burden on the industrial classes and their families to support the extravagance of the Ministry of the colony ; nearly exempting the wealthy, especially ihose large holders of land who can boast of their thousands of income, but who are not now paying in proportion to their wealth, for the support of the Government, anything more than a comparative fraction of the burdens borne by the laboring man, who receives but a few shillings per day. As my policy and principles have been known for these last five and twenty years, I deem it superfluous to dwell upon them, but at the hustings I will answer any questions you may think proper to put to me. I am. Gentlemen, Your obedient servant. E. BAIGENT.
