THE LATE RIFLE-MATCH.
To the Editor of the 'Nelson Evening Mail.' Sir, — I learn that our late competitors in the two Rifle Matches which lately came off at Ranzau aud Nelson, the City Rifles, No. 1 , are complaining bitterly that one of their crack shots was not allowed by the Waimea Company to snoot at his OAvn time aud convenience, instead of firing with the rest of his Corps, a proceeding which is, I believe, quite without precedent. They allege, lam told, that if he had been permitted°to do so, the victory would undoubtedly have fallen to them. I think this conclusion has been arrived at somewhat hastily', for I would remind these grumblers that one of our Company, who has been proved to be one of the best shots in the province, Mr Edwin Thomas, was also absent, and his score would, in all human probability, have made a preponderance in our favor so great that even this vaunted Avould not have been able to affect it very materially. I am, &c, A Barbaeian. Waimea West, 14 June, 1867.
