NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.
Thursday, Mat 23. Present — Messrs. Burn, in the chair, Bentley, Carter, aud Rout. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The questiou postponed from last meeting relative to a nuisance caused by a pigstye, on Mr. Hooper's property iv Bridgestreet, was set at rest by its removal by Air. Hooper. The following tenders were opened for gravelling, Hampden-street East : — W. Osman, £2 7s. 6d. per chain ; a tender without a signature, £3 7s. ; Dunlop aud Cockram, £l 165. ; C. Bray, £2 12s. It was agreed that the tender of Dunlop and Cockram be accepted. The following tenders were opened for curbiug Bridge-street : — T. Miles, ls. 2d. per lineal foot, or £3 19s. per ch.ain ; Taylor aud Company, £5 18s. per chain ; Alexander Adams, £16 5s per chain ; Bloy and Gillespie, £7 18s. per chain. It is determined that Mr. Miles's contract should be accepted, the work to be completed within three months from the date of signing the contract. A discussion arose relative to a depository for night soil, and it was settled that the further ventilation of the subject should be postponed until the publication of the Report by the Commission appointed by his Honor the Superintendent. Thn Secretary was instructed to publish the bye-laws relative to the exposure of the refuse of packing cases, offal, &c, in the pubiic streets, and also to inform the residents having rights-of-way in Bridge-street, that they will be expected to pave within the curbing in a similar manner to that which has been adopted at the private entrance to the Bank of New Zealand. A letter was received from Mr. Watkinsj relative to making improvements in Grove-street West, and also in Trafalgarstreet North. The work for Grove-street was ordered to be done ; specifications to be ready by the next Board meeting, and
the secretary was difected to inform Mr. Watkins that any rate-payer contributing half the expense towards the promotion of any road, can obtain the carrying of such a work in any part of the city. It was proposed and carried that willow stakes should be driven, five feet apart, all along the western side of G-rove-street West, for about 15 chains distauce. A letter was received from Captain Rough requesting that a few loads of gravel might be laid in Brougham-street, which was ordered to he dove. Several accounts were passed and ordered to be paid, and the Board then adjourned until Friday, 7th June.
