Ex-President Pierce was once very earnestly besought by a neighbour to endorse a bill for him. He re fused, civilly, being a very prudent man. The neighbor pressed it, saying that it was a small thing to do, and would be of much service to him. Again the ex-President declined. The neighbour became urgent. Then said Mr. Pierce : -'John, look here. If I put my hand to this bill, you will not pay it ; I shall have to do so, and then we shall quarrel. If you please we'll quarrel now, while the money is in my pocket."
The Court Journal says that there exists no wish in yachting circles to detract irom the glory of the late spirited Ocean Kace, at the same time it must be borne in mind that several yachts belonging to Great Britain have done some equally spirited nautical feats ; for instance, the royal yacht schooner Wyvern, 205 tons, English measurement, the property of the late Duke of Marlborough, made some years ago a rapid passage to Australia, with Lord Alfred Churchill and a friend on board. Again, Lord Dufferiu's cruise to the high latitudes. These are only two out of many instances. It has become of late a common habit in England to cry ourselves down in various ways at any momentary success of any of our neighbors. Let it be either racing, army, navy, etc., we immediately begin to cry out, lowering ourselves without adding any real or additional lustre to the success ofour neighbor, whateyer it may be.
