We have been in conversation with a person who has just returned from the ranges adjoining Major Paton's run, situated about ten miles north-east of Motueka, and he states that the surrounding country is highly indicative of the existence of the precious metal. It may be a question for the consideration of the Government whether it would not be advisable to appoint some person to make a report upon the district. The cost would not be great, and the probable benefit to the province might be incalculable, for the population attracted to such a gold-field must pass through Nelson, and not as in the case of the West Coast gold-fields, be landed at the southern ports of that district ; all its supplies too, must be derived from our city. We throw out this suggestion, and hope that it may receive its due consideration at the hands of the Government.

We have lately inspected some very beautiful specimens of sea weed (algce), gathered on the coasts of New Zealand, which have been lately purchased by the Nelson Institute, and are now deposited in its Museum. These were collected by Mr. Brook, and very exquisitely have they been prepared and arranged by him. We understand that his Excellency Sir George Grey, on the occasion of his visit to the Museum, expressed his high admiration of these specimens, and that lie has since, through Mr. Henry Adams, ordered a set to be prepared for him and forwarded to him lor ms collection at Kauwau.
