The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 1867.

The dinner to his Excellency the Governor came off last evening, in the Provincial Hall. It rained in torrents all the evening, but this did not prevent a large company from assembling. His Honor the Superintendent presided. The I length of our report of the proceedings, connected with the reception having excluded several matters of local interest, we are reluctantly obliged to defer our report of the speeches till Saturday, in order to bring up arrears. It is understood that his Excellency will hold a levee on Saturday next. To-morrow being Good Friday, the Evening Mail will not be published. At a meeting of the members of the Church of England, held at Appleby on the 16th inst, the Rev. W. Lewis, in the chair, it was resolved that immediate steps should be taken towards the erection of a church in the district, and that the Rev. W. Lewis, Mr. C. Best, Mr. Chamberlain, and Mr. G. Gifford, be a committee to raise the necessary funds, and superintend the carrying out of the work. We are informed that great suceess has attended the labours of the Hit-or-Miss Company at the Wakamarina. The resulf of two days work was 104 ounces of gold, which was divided amongst a party of eight. The Intelligence from the new rush north of the Buller, is very encouraging. The business men who have gone there and returned are of opinion that an extensive gold-field will be found there. The wash dirt is black sand, a specimen of which was shown by a Nelson resident yesterday, and it appears to be very rich. ' On Tuesday last, Charles Good, the man who was apprehended on warrant, at Picton, on a charge of stealing a horse from Mr. Martin, of Stoke, was brought . before the Resident Magistrate, Mr. Martin having declined to prosecute, the man was discharged. The opening of the Marlborough Provincial Council, is to take place on the Ist of May.
