A NEW IDEA.
To the Editor op the ' Evening Mail. Sib — I have been much amused at some letters which appeared hi one or two of your late papers, on the subject of the provisions for the Governor's dinner; and I am quite grieved to see how deeply hurt "Anti- Gluttony" is. at the prospect of his not sharing the best of the good things that are to be provided on tbe great occasion. Now, as I belong to the class of "strong-minded females" (and consequently not admissable to public dinners), 1 cannot be accused of favoring either "gluttons" or "anti-gluttons," if 1 suggest Good Friday as the day to be fixed on for the banquet, when a goodly supply of salt fish .and nothing else) would sufficiently equalise the viands. An unlimited supply of Adam's ale would prevent any discussion as to the merits of Champagne verms Hooper and Dodson, and the last named gentlemen would be the only ones entitled to quarrel at an "opposition brewery " being started. As all tbe fish would 'be served hot, " Anti- Gluttony " might not object to tickets being raised in price to one guinea ; and as egg sauce of course would be served, both goose and • gander would share alike. The Committee ■may perhaps adopt these ideas, and satisfy .11 alike at the expense of, Yours devotedly, Sabdine. Nelson, April 11, 1867.
