The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, APRIL 8, 1867. WRECK OF THE QUEEN.
"^Ve are indebted to Dr. Cusack; for some additional particulars relating to the •wreck of tlie steamer Queen, whose striking on Cook's Rock, we published oq Saturday last. The Queen, Captain
Kreef't, left Wellington for Nelson,, on Friday evening last, about 5 p.m. The vessel was coining here to bo hove down. There were several passengers on board for this port. The night was very dark, and at quarter to twelve o'clock, the vessel struck. Dr. Cusaek says on Cook's Kock, at the entrance of Queen Charlotte sound, another % account says on a rock near " the Brothers." In five minutes after she struck the water was up to the engine fires, aud in half an hour she sank in 60 fathoms, the vessel haviug drifted off into deep water, it was necessary to provide for the safety of the passengers and crew. Without much difficulty three boats were launched into which the crew and'passengers got and made for Tory Chan - nel were they all landed safely. It happened that the Airedale was passing at the time, saw the shipwrecked persons, and eouveyed most of them to Wellington. Some of the passengers went to Picton, amongst whom were Dr. Cusack and .Mr. Martelli. Yesterday Dr. Cusack telegraphed to Nelson for his horse, which was taken to him somewhere on the other side of the Maungatapu, and he arrived here about noon to-day. Mr. Martelli waited at Picton for the Airedale, which is expected to-morrow with the other passengers. We understand that the Queen was wholly uninsured. It is stated, in a telegram from Wellington, that a private mcetiug of the shareholders of the New Zealand Steam Navigation Company was held on the reception of the news of the mishap. It was recommended that the number of directors should be reduced to three or five, but the meeting opposed all attempts to wind up the company.
