A telegram was received by the Provincial Government this morningj in which Mr. Stafford states, that His Excellency will arrive in Nelson, on the,._.*Jth instant. The returns from St Leonard's Woolshed have come to hand. The number who voted for Mr. Curtis was 10, and for Mr. Barnicoat 9. Last eveuing, Mr. Deck, of Wellington, gave au interesting lecture on Prophecy, at the Temperance Hall. The lecture w*as an exposition of the prophecy in the 9th of Daniel, which was interpreted in the light of the Evangelists who have referred to it, the Epistles, and the Apocalypse. Having given his views of the 69 weeks referred to in the . prophecy, he dwelt on the blank preceding that of the 70th — the present dispensation. The coming aspect of European events was held to be the development of important political events foreshadowed in this prophecy. The lecturer did not give a very hopeful view of the present condition of Christendom. He showed it would get worse and worse till the end pointed to in the prophetic page. The lecture was well illustrated by diagrams, and listened to attentively by a large and respectable audience. We understand that Messrs. Groom and Jones, who were sent by the Provincial . Government to endeavor to find a road from the Baton to the Karamea, have just returned. It appears they have succeeded so far as to find a pass that may be made into a good road, from the Baton to the bend of the Karamea. When the road is made good, parties will be able to go from the Baton to the Karamea bend in one day. We thiok the Provincial Government deserve credit for the promptitude with which they have acted in the matter, • and we doubt not this attempt at exploration will be attended with good results. Mr. Thomas Connell of Auckland, late of Nelson, Barrister-at-law, has been appointed Eevising Officer under the " Friendly Societies, and Building Societies Acts," for the Province of Auckland; vice E. J. Cox, whose appointment has been cancelled.
