The half yearly meeting of the Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade was held ou the 18th inst., Captain Kuight in the chair. It appeared from the statement of the Treasurer that the receipts amounted to £330 19s. 6d., which were derived from the following sources : — Provincial Government, £200 ; honorary members, £52 10s.; subscribers, £5 os.; working members, £8 45.; fines, 95.; Liverpool, London, aud Globe Qpmpauy, £20 ; Northern Insurance Company, £15; New Zealand Insurance Company, £15; Union Bank of Australia, £5 os. ; Bank of New South Wales, £o ; doualious, £4 Is.; sundries, ss. 6d. A balauce of £200 12s. 9d., remained in the Uuion Bank, the sum of £130 6s. 9c1., having been expended for the purposes of the Brigade. The balance in th-s Bank was expected to be greatly reduced shortly, as the hook aud ladder carriage would cost £180, aud uniform and caps, £10 0. A subscription of £25 would be obtained from the Board of Works. It was stated that all the Banks had subscribed except the Bank of New Zealand, the manager of which had refused to give anything to the funds of the Brigade. It was remarked that but for the liberal conduct of the Provincial Government and the other bodies mentioned in the report, the Brigade would have been quite unable to obtain the appliances they have now at hand. It was intimated that the subscriptions from the honorary members, might be greatly increased, and that an appeal to the property holders in the town - would most probably result in an increase of the subscriptions. It was resolved to accept the invitation of the Reception Committee, to join in the procession, on the arrival of his Excelleuy the Governor ; that a committee be appointed to make the necessary arrangements ; and that Messrs. Graham, R. Burn, aud Acton Adams, wait upon the Insurance Companies and the public to solicit further subscriptions. The thanks of the meeting were given to Messrs. Blackett and Graham, the auditors, aud to Captain Knight, the secretary and officers of the Brigade, for the efficient manner in which they have performed their duties during the past half-year.

We are indebted to the officers of the s.s. Wellington, which arrived this morning, with the Suez mail, for the following exchanges: — Wellington Evening Post; 20th to 23rd; Otago Witness, 16th; Otago Times, 20th ; Christchurch Evening Mail 18th to 21st; Canterbury Press, 16th; Marlborough Press, 20th ; Dunedin Evening Star, 19th and 20th insts.

After a long spell of dry weather, efreshing rain. has fallen. It was much wanted both in town and country ; in the former it has come opportunely for domestic and sanitary purposes ; and in the latter to cool . and moisten the parched gardens and pastures.

_HPl^_Cnr>l_MWß«______-___W______^ l Kill _W_-_---B__l '„ This morning, some fifty Maories, : most of them well mounted, came I to Nelson, from the Pelorus district. i They came expecting to see the Governor, and expressed great disappointment on being informed he was not likely to arrive. Several women were with them. We suppose they will stay to-morrow over , and then return.

It is stated in the Wellington papers that the Governor is expected to be at Wellington to-morrow, to meet General Chute there. The Brisk, in tlie absence of telegraphic communication, was hourly expected when last advices lef**. It is understood that Mr. Stafford will apprise the Nelson Reception Committee of his Excellency's arrival and intentions.

This evening will witness the closing scene of the Chri. -t Church Bazaar. A lottery will be held of all the articles that remain unsold. The tickets will range in value from 2s. 6d. to £4 each. This morning the ladies were busily engaged packing up ; and the Hall presented a desolate appearance compared with the activity and excitement which were exhibited on Friday and Saturday last. We append the approximate result: Mrs. Richmond's stall, £lc2; Mrs. Johnston, £130; Mrs. W. Adams, £80; Lady Mouro, £60 ; Mrs. Gully, £90 ; Postoffice, £10 ; taken at the door, £70 ; total, £592.

We understand that No. 1 City Company, lhe Cadet Rifle Company, and the Artillery Cadets, are to assemble in full dress, for parade, at the Botanical Gardens, on Wednesday next, at. 5 p.m. About 120 of all ranks may be expected to muster on the occasion, and no doubt a strong body of citizens will assemble to witness the military evolutions of their gallant defenders.
