It appears from telegrams received from Wellington, that the Rev. Father Rolaud, a Roman Catholic priest, was murdered by the Hauhaus, on the beach at Waingaporo, some days ago. A half-caste, who was in company with him, was taken prisoner. Mr. Curtis continues to address the electors in various parts of the province. Since Saturday last he has held meetings at Upper aud Lower Wakefield and Waimea West. To-day he meets the electors of Moutere, and to-morrow those of Motueka and Riwaka. He Avill meet the electors of Suburban South on his return from the out districts. The result of the competitive firing at Wakapuaka Avas as follows : —
In the Resident Magistrate's Court, today, Mary Jane Smith Avas charged Avith being drunk and incapable on thy Church Hill, this morning. She said she was from Hokitika. It being her first offence here, the Magistrate ordered her to be discharged. Evidence was taken iu the adjourned case of Norton v. Baker, to ascertain if tbe plaintiff owed the defendant anything for board and lodging, so as to justify the latter in detaining his clothes. His Worship held there was no proof that plaintiff had been a lodger, dismissed the set ofE, and ordered the clothes be given up. Baker to pay costs. We are requested by Mr. Poynter to state that he was misunderstood by our reporter in some remarks he made on Saturday last in reference to Mr. D. Sinclair. He said he considered Mr. Sinclair had gotoutof temper unnecessarily, and that therefore he had made those observations in consequence of the complaint of his clerk. On Sunday last, a sermon was preached in the school-room, Stoke, io the afternoon, by the Rev. J. Davis, in aid of the Sabbath school. There was a good congregation. On Tuesday, the annual treat was given to the children, who appeared to relish the good things provided for them, and seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly. At half-past 5 o'clock a large company sat down to tables well furnished with edibles. The room was tastefully decorated with flowers and shrubs. Some nicely worked mottoes attracted the attention of those present. The public meeting was presided over by Mr. M. Campbell, the room was crowded with parents and children. expecting to reap a plentiful crop. Mr. J. T. Smith, the secretary, read the annual report from which it appeared that the school contained 52 scholars and 16 teachers.
