It has for some time past been a matter of notoriety that Mr. Whitaker has been offered the permanent post of Attorney-General of the Colony, and it is probable that hh resignation of the Superintendentship is only the preliminary step to bis acceptance of the other office. .

Recent advices from Taurauga state that hostilities havß been resumed at "Whnkamarama, On the 15th ult. a force of 250 Europeans and 250 Arawaß, attacked the Hau-haus, who were repulsed. Meeers. Jordan, of the Engineers, and Jeffs, of the Waikatos, were shot dead. Two villages were burnt, and three natives killed. Three Europeans were wounded. The Hon. the Defence Minister accompanied the expedition, which was under the command of Major St. John, Capiuiu Skeet heading the Eugiueers.
