The notorious Sullivan came from IlnIdtika by the Airedale, yesterday after- j noon, in charge of Constable Stokes. His/ presence on board had been kept a secrtti by the few who knew of it. When the! vessel reached the wharf; the captain sent' the steward to order a cub, to vdi h iliei constable tmi! We undt-rsiand that Sullivan hus let. the- poll::e of Hokitika and eurrour.ding disiric;.< into the secrets of the antecedents of numerous unprincipled persons -who figure there under various diguises. There will be a general raid made on these persons so soon as the police have completed (heir arrangements. "What is to Le done with Sullivan, is she i.ext problem, about wl.i-h we shall have s«,m^thing to «ay at a future time. In ihe Resident Magistrate's Court, this morning, Edward Stauton, Vv T m. Walker, and Wni. Arnold were each fined iOs. aud costs for flrunkfMiness. Alary Buckler, who was discharged from prison on Friday last, where she had been confined for vagrancy, was charged wilh the same offence to-day. She was found siftiu" in the street, at the end of Bridge-street^, at half-past 1 o'clock on Sunday morning. The Magistrate let her off; but told her if she was brought up again oo that charge he should semi her to prison. Harry Quinton was brought up vn remand from Saturday, and charged with stealing money from James Sioiili. Evidence in proof of the charge was taken on Saturday ; but this moruiug, the prosecutor not appearing, the prisoner was discharged; his Worship observing that it. was a case of suspicion, but the evidence was not suilioioutly strong to warrant a conviction. Charles Brown was charged by Coustable Beallie with stealing peaches from the garden of Mr. Harper in Hardy-street. The constable produced a handkerchief full of various kinds of fruit he found in the possession of the prisoner, and a portion of which he saw him take. The owner of the garden did not appear to prosecute. The prisoner said he bought the fruit, and
lliat lie cinie by the Egmont yesterday. The charge of (heft having been dismissed, the prisoner was charged with drunkenness, for which he was fined 10s. and costs. f~~~~We regret to hare to mention a circum- ? stance which discloses a large amount of I carelessness on the part of the officers of i the Nelson gaol, it will be remembered I that at the sitting of the Supreme Court, in May last, a Mrs. Spemllove was sentenced to IS months imprisonment for infanticide. A few days ago this woman was, we are informed on good authority, confined in the gaol, v.nd the child has since died. It is generally understood that persons under sentence of imprisonment, arc not allowed to communicate with any person except in the presence of some of the officers of the gaol. Various reports are alioat us to who is the father of the child, wiiu-h we refrain from publishing now. The afl'air will no doubt be the subject of a strict investigation. -"—^"SV i)fii!i;iiit mctccr was Sft j n this morning, a link. 1 i-efure- 2 u'cim-k, by the iiuliccmati on fluty in H.ir'ly-sii'Ci-'t.
