WESTPORT TOWNSHIP, BULLER RIVER.
To the Editor of the Evening Mail. Sir —To make the Buller oue of the finest districts on the West Coast, and practically turn to accouut its immense resources, the Provincial Government must bend the whole of their energies to open up the interior by roads. One great fault I find with them is, they are not doing justice to Westport. It is folly to expect people to purchase in a swamp, which the town of Westport is. Let them clear the street (Queen and Palmerston street), and one or two cross streets. They then would find purchasers for town allotments; storekeepers and others settling down with their families, giviug permanent prosperity to any place. The purchasers in Palmerston-street, thought the street was to be cleared by this time, never fancying the Provincial Government were going to act as they have done in the Public Coal Quay reserve, a fruitful source of litigation when the Council meets. I am glad to see the telegraph is to be laid down from Buller to Nelson and Greymouth, and that a competent staff of surveyors are to be forwarded to meet the requirements of the district, and suitable blocks of laud laid off round Fox and Pukihi for farm and dairy purposes. Yours, &c, Viatoe. January 18, 1856.
