THE GUIDWIFE'S SANG TO HER GUIDMAN. Tote—" There's nae luck about the house." Weel I like to see your smile, Guidman ! ye look so kind; My saddest thoughts it does beguile, It brightens so my mind. What though at times I maybe fret About a married life, The happy day I ne'er forget That I was made your wife; For I was tired of singleness, Wi' sighing I was sair, An' surely it's nae common lot To be your dearest- care ; For weel I like, &c. Oh! how it lifts my heart aboon My troubles an' my trials, To rest wi' you, noo wark is dune, An' crackin' watch your smiles ; The golden stores o' wealth an' fame May gie their owners bliss, But naething yet that has a name Could gie me joy like this; So well I like, &c. But what is fame, or what is gear, Compared wi' sweet content; A world o' baith wad be owre dear, If peace for them was spent; The golden stores that I approve, The fame that I pursue, Is but to live an' die in love, Wi' my dear bairns an' you. Oh! weel I like, &c. ~~-*.Qur merriment and daffin' loud, Ave maybe gane for aye ; But fun an' foolish laughin' loud, Should only ha'e their day; To see you smilin' there content, Wi' looks as light's the sun, Is worth an age o' merriment, A hundred years o' fun. Oh! weel I like, &c. No doubt this life's a weary fight, A battle lang an' sair; To keep ilk correc, straight, an' right, Has need o' meikle care; But when we do our very best, Whatever may betide," A happy hope will gi'e us rest, An' Heaven will be our guide. Oh! weel I like to see your smile, Guidman ! ye look so kind; My saddest thoughts it does beguile, It lightens so my mind. WILLIAM HOGG. Nelson, January, 1867.
