The mail for Hokitika, Greymouth, and Australian Colonies, per Rangatira, closes to-morrow at 2.30 p.m. The Marlborough Press has the following proposal for a railway from Picton to the West Coast : — We have long been on the look oufc for a novelty in this province, and a capital idea has been suggested to us for connecting the splendid Harbor of Picton with the Buller and Grey by a railway ! There is a long stretch, say 80 miles of level country between the two termini, with few engineering difficulties in the way. Such a Hue would-be a direct route from Wellington I to the Grey, with its inexhaustible markets, through splendid agricultural countiy. We lay the projeet before our readers, who are better acquainted with the country than ourselves, for ventilation during the week, aud if the public see its importance, as we believe ifc deserves, immediate action should be taken before Nelson secures the prize. We consider- the plan is far superior to the Nelson one, and an Act has been already passed for a poition of the distance, aud no doubt parties-can be found willing to undertake its construction on the same terms. The Compensation Revisi; u Court in Auckland has concluded its sittings, having: cut ___> 7 O down the claims for compensation by about £10,000 to the .great dissatisfaction of the claimants. The colony at large has some cause for gratitude to Mr. Whitakei 1 , Super-, intendent of Auckland, for carrying out so unpopular a measure. - .
