Some surprise has been felt that Messrs.. Friend and Hymen, w.ho left Nelson for the Deep Creek some ten days ago, have not relumed. They were to be absent only four days,, ami had contracted to supply a. number of photographic views of the Maungatapu, at the expiration of that time. They also undertook to send an account of. their doings by all the persons they met on the road, which they have not done. They took a grey pack-horse, and inteuded to sell photographic views and collect money at Deep Cre«k. On Saturday week last they were seen by two men on the other side of- the rock, to whom they said they were goiug-on to Deep Creek. As they have been so long, absent, were under contract to return, and have not sent an accouut of themselves, their friends have very naturally felt anxious about them. We understand that Mr. Jervi.s. is going to Deep Creek to-day or to-morrow, and that he has promised if he does uot meet with them on the road, to return immediately and make a report. The weather has been bad, aiul such as to be likely to impede their " movements, yet persons, with the history of the recent occurrences ou the Maungatapu ■• fresh in their, memories, dp uot ; like: delays" that are unaccounted for ou the part of- tra- ; vellers iii whom they take au, interest.

We should incline to the conclusion that thes actual burden of taxation, taking into account the increased commercial activity of late years, is at least 30 per cent, greater since 1861, and that about 20 per cent is due to our Native policy and Native war. Mr. Bagge, who has been in the service of Government in the Post oifice at Blenheim for more than six years, is now appointed to the office of Chief Postmaster, and the salary ' is fixed at £250 a year. We understand that he is directing military operations, and that his influence has drawn out 300 of the 18th Regt., under Miijor Rock, for service in the field. It will of course be for His Excellency to reconcile this proceeding with Mr. CardwelPs instructions, and to satisfy the British taxpayer who may possibly grumble if he hears of it ; but uo one probably in the colony will complain, in this instance, if au imperial officer treats the suppression of rebellion as a matter of imperial concern ; especially if it is done, as is no doubt the case, just to keep the troops in working order while they remain.
