Thomas Audley, chief clerk in the Hokitika post office, lias been committed for trial for having stolen a letter containing money. For some time suspicion had rested upon him and a clever trap to catch him was laid by Detective Brown and the Postmaster, Mr. Dick. The former wrote a letter to Melbourne, showed it to the postmaster, and in it put a note, the number of which was. taken, and which was otherwise marked. When the mail for Melbourne (jlosed, Mr. Dick, found that the letter was missing, and the detective taxed the chief clerk with the robbery, took him into custody; aud ou searching him found the money in his pocketsr^The; prisoner when brought before the Resident Magistrate had nothing to say.
