Twenty-six Select Committees were appointed to consider the following subjects *. — Confiscated Lands, House Accommodation, Reporting Debates, Petitions, Library, Standing Orders, Penal Establishment, Waste Lands, Postal, Taranaki Ironsand, Waikato Militia Pay, Gold-fields, Antedated Crown Grants, Private Bills, Standing Orders (joint), Selection, Audit, New Assembly Buildings, Petition of Bank of New South Wales, Building and Land Societies Bill, Poisons Administration, Printing, Maori Petitions, Arbitration Courts, Importation of Animals, Privileges.
Of these the Select Committees on New Assembly Buildings, Selection, Standing Orders, and Standing Orders (joint) did not report.
The duration ofthe session was 101 days, of which 61 were sitting days, during which the House of Representatives sat 383 hours 30 minutes, of which 16 hours 30 minutes were after midnight. The average sitting of each day was six hours 16 minutes.
The mail for Buller, Grey, and Hokitika, per Kennedy, closes to-morrow, at 2. p.m. The first general meeting of the members of the Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade took place last evening, at the Trafalgar Hotel ; Captain J. T. Knight iv the chair. A variety of correspondence having been read by the secretary, it was resolved that the thanks of the brigade be given to his Honor the Superintendent, for the support he has given, and to the Provincial Government for placing the sum of £200 at the disposal of the brigade ; to the Board of Works for the grant of £25: and to the agenta of the New Zealand and Globe Insurance Oflices, for the grant of £20 to the brigade. It was resolved that an account, on behalf of the brigade, be opened at the Union Batik ; that Messrs. Thornton, Richardson, Merrington, Phillips, aud the Secretary, bo requested to wait on t-he hou. members, the lusurauce Companies, and tiie public, and solicit subscriptions; that the articles required by the different companies be obtained ; that the secretary write to the brigades at Dunedin and Ballarat, for plans aud cost of hose, reel, hook and ladder apparatus complete ; that tenders be called for for the supply of the various artioles required by the brigade, and that a special meeting be called for the purpose of opening the same; that the captain take steps to procure a fire bell, and erect it in a proper position near the Government Buildings ; that tbe fines of absent members be enforced. A number were admitted as acting members, and a number elected as honorary members. In the Resident Magistrate's Court, to-day, judgment was given for plaintiffs, in the following cases. Anslow v. Rowley, £l 16 ; Tilt v. Mears, £12 ; Wimsett v. Rowley, £4 17s. 3d.; Harper v. Mears, £8 Bs. 4d. The Wellington Advertiser of the lOth has the following :— An instauce of the advantage of telegraphic communication throughout the colony, for the detection and apprehension of criminals, occurred on Suuday last. A man named John Lynch absconded from Lytteltou, with some property not his own, and came on here by the Airedale ; but the wires were set to work, and a message reached the Inspector of Police to look out for him. He was accordingly *•' looked for," and was apprehended on landing, and conveyed to the lock-up, where he awaits an opportunity for sending him back to. Lyttelton. Tho Wellington Land Purchase Loan of £80,000 is now in the market, and tenders * for it will be received at the Provincial treasury up to 4 o'clock ou Wednesday, the 7th November. The debentures of £100 each are
r edeemable within a period not exceeding five years from the lst July last, and bear interest at the rate of 10 per cent., payable half-yearly, at the Provincial Treasury, or at the branches of the Bankof New South Wales throughout this colony.
The Land Revenue of the Province of Marlborough for the mouth ended 31st August last is £1440 19s. Id., and the expenditure of the department for that period, £212 13s. 9d.
The customs revenue for the Port of Wairau for the quarter euded September, 1866, was £674 4s. 4d., and for the corresponding quarter of 1865, £592 7s. Bd. The customs reveuue for the Port of Picton for tho same quarters was £381 17s. 5d., and £567 Bs. Bd.
It is rumoured that Mr. Arthur Beauchamp intends to resign his seat in the House of Representatives, and also in the Marlborough Provincial Council. Captain Kenny, it is said, will likewise resign his seat in the Provincial Council.
The Presbyterian body of Christchurch are making efforts to raise a sum of money for the purchase of a site and the erection of a Church for St. Paul's Congregation, which hitherto, has met in the Town Haii. Among other means to this end, a bazaar will be held on the 18th and 19th instant.
Belmont sperm candles are selling in Auckland at ls. per lb. In Wanganui they are charged ls. 6d. or Is. 9d. Why all this difference ? is a question put by the Wanganui Chronicle.
One batch of Supplementary Estimates brought down towards* the close of the session that has just terminated, amounted to the sum of £129,893. Among the items, we notice £3000 for departmental expenses, dies, presses &c., in the stamp office ; £500 for chemical laboratory under the geological survey Department; £38,000, submarine cable and telegraph extension to Auckland ; aud £50,000 for final settlement of military settlers, and surveys and administration of confiscated lands. *^-\
The Independent of the llth says it will, be seen by our Wairarapa correspondence that\ the natives are still in a somewhat bouncible frame of mind, and that the settlers consequently feel somewhat uneasy. It is to be hoped the Government will keep a watchful I eye on the Wairarapa Hau Haus. __ J
The Independent of the 13th states that it was reported tbat Major M'DomieU's force had had another engagement with the Hauhaus, in which the latter were again beaten.
We perceive from the Canterbury journals, that an exhibition of stock, will be held in Timaru, on the 24th instant, when prizes will be given for exhibits classed as follows : — Merino sheep ; sheep for grazing on cultivated grasses in enclosed lands ; long and short wooled ; fat wethers ; cattle ; draught horses ,- other horses ; pigs ; sheep dogs ; farming implimeuts ; and dairy prodnce. Entries to be made not later than the 17th instant.
The M. Express says while we in Blenheim continue to enjoy the advantage of realy good fiour at a reasonable rate of 195., we are informed that our neighbors at Picton are paying 255. the lOOlbs., a. rate probably higher than any other place in the colony.
Intelligence from the western portion of the interior of New South Wales states that the sheepowners are busily engaged with their lambing, which promises to be one of the most prolific they have had for years. In one or two flocks the increase has been hitherto full 90 per cent.
There wiil not be any steamer from Panama on the 21st of this mouth, as it will be remembered that, in order to effect the change in the departure from Sydney, the Rakaia did not leave there until September 1, instead of August 15; she would not therefore; reach Panama until the end of September, and start on her return voyage on October 26, arriving here ou November 21. — Independent.
Mr. Eager, the Treasurer of New South Wales, made his financial statement on the 27 Sept. last. The sum required for 1867 amounts to £2,062,992. The Treasurer concluded his statement by maintaining the advisibility of having at no very distant period a National Bank of Issue in that colony.
