A Some excitement was caused this morning, by the report that some parties had arrived overland from the Buller, bringing with them a large quantity of gold. On making inquiry Ave were informed that three men o.f Moonlight's party, who had been prospecting at the Upper Buller for the last six months, brought 251bs. of the precious metal with them as the proceeds of their labor during that time. A passenger by the Claud Hamilton has . informed us, that on Friday, the 21st ult., when that vessel was two days out from Sydney, one of the passengers jumped overboard and was drowned. He had attempted to do so on two or three occasions and was stopped by the passengers. Shortly before he succeeded iu the attempt some of the passengers informed the captain of the man's conduct. The captain refused to credit that a man vrould act so absurdly, and made no attempt to restrain him. Before jumping overboard the man gave the steward his purse and money, and wished him good bye. Drink /was the cause of the wretched man's conduct. Professor La Griff announces that he will deliver a lectore on the anatomy of the brain, and the" organs of the mind, in the Provincial Hall, on Wednesday evening.
The Otago papers speak highly of the ability of the lecturer, i his extensive -knowledge of the science of phrenology, and tfie success- of his experiments in manipulating the heads of persons desirous of undergoing that interesting ordeal. No doubt the lecturer will be well patronised, and the lecture will uot be the less interesting in consequence of being delivered by a gentleman of color. We are informed, says ttya Otago Daily Times, that a new steamer, named the Pareora, which was built expressly for the Southern Steam.Navigation Compauy (Dunedin), has beeu lately launched at Glasgow. Her length between the perpendiculars is 175 feet, 20 feet beam, and 9 feet depth of hold. She contains stowage room for 170 tons cargo, exclusive of coal, and has accommodation for 4i i cabin and GO steerage passengers, and is fitted with twin screws, which are driven by a pair of .85-horse power engines. Wheu fully laden and ready for sea the Pareora will only draw 7 feet 6 inches of water, which taken in coujunction with her other good qualities, eminently fits her for the West Coast trade, in which we believe it is intended she is to engage. Late accounts from the Scandinavian rush are said, by the West Coast Times, to be favorable. The first hill opened, is turning out magnificently — quite equal, aud in some instances far surpassing the anticipations indulged in by claim holders on obtaining their first prospects. Throughout the hill, gold has been distributed with no niggardly hand, and one or two of the claims would not have disgraced in yield the richest gullies opened in Victoriii's palmiest days. One party is sanguine of obtaining from 200 ounces to 300 ouuces each share, and another can wash half an ounce to the dish out of the face of a drive, taking the dirt roughly from the "stoup." In this claim a single drive running along the boundary, yielded 150 ounces, Every claim in work on the hill is paying well, and we believe that we are quite within bounds in stating that not one ol them will give less than £200 per share. Last week the seventh hill on this lead was rushed, some parties having struck 4 grs. and 5 grs. to the dish iu a tuuuel in its northern slope. The country between Scandinavian Hill, and St afford towa is disappointing miners who hold shares there, as thes lead (if such it can be termed) is patchy/ poor, nnd narrow, and many men have, iu consequence, deserted it — to attend, however, a more promising locality, opened between Ballarat Hill and Staifordtowu, where a shaft was bottomed on a hill similar in formation to the others, which have given such satisfactory returns ou the same line of country, and prospects of frorn a J dwt. to 1 dwt. the dish obtained. Wc learn, from the Wakatip Mail, that the miners in that district are also turning their attention to sheep farming. The Mail says: — The increase of the number of sheeprauning on the gold fields of the Wakatip is very satisfactory, aud a large amount of capital is being invested in this calling ; miners aud others finding the capital for practical shepherds. There is no security of tenure I beyond the payment of an annual license of j 2s 6d per head for cattle and 6d for sheep, and no tract of country set apart to each license holder by law, but this latter part of the matter is mutually arranged between the holders of stock. The following complaint appears in the G. H. Argus, of the 27th ult :— To A. Sneyd Kynnersley, Esq. Sir — Previous to my leaving the Nelson Province I wish (with all due respect to you) to give you my reasons for so doing. I was the first man that started a ferry, at considerable risk to myself, pecuniarily speaking, and it has been ultimately shown with great benefit to the public. Some slight mark of respect, if nothing more, might have been shown me, by you or the Government you represent, by giving me a preference for a renewal of the right to hold the ferry. The ' consequence of your not doing so is, that I am obliged to remove my wife and sick child to another province, aud the result of such removal (I am afraid to anticipate the consequences;. If the Nelson Government act with all men as they have done with me in this instance, they will find before long that men like myself, anxious

The Wakatip Mail says :— Mining newsirom Skippers is satisfactory. Southbergand Co. have lifted some of their amalgam to put in fresh qucksilver. The amalgam is said to look well, and the shareholders arc anticpating a large cake of gold next week. The Eldorado claim promises well. We are informed by Mr. Perry, who' has just arrived, that the machinery of the British and American Company will at once be started. We hear the Hercules Co. have, in their second tuuuel, struck a reef eight feet thick, which contains gold throughout. The Ophir aiso has some good stone and is beiug prospected. The Mouutain Race, Wire-rope, and other sluiciug companies are working day and night, with good prospects. The Dantzig Gazette says that there is a soldier now in that town who was engaged in the battle of Langensalza, where he received eight shots, none of which did him auy injury. Three of these passed though his coat tails, one knocked off his epaulette, another his cap, another made a hole in his trousers, und one knocked off a piece of nail. The following answer is recorded of the Empress Eugenie to a French marshal who expressed his admiration for the courage she had displayed during her recent visit to the cholera patients at Amiens : — " Sir, it is thus we go under fire."
